Letters to Thomas H. Barnes from the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and The Associated Publishers, 1927-1929.

The collection contains four form letters from the Association asking for financial assistance to continue its programs and publish the "Journal of Negro History," and urging the observance of Negro History Week. Letters were signed by Carter G. Woodson, Director of the Association. In addition there are five form letters to Barnes from The Associated Publishers offering photographs, and pictures of famous Negroes and books on Negro life and history including Woodson's "Education of the Negro Prior to 1861." These letters are signed by David E. Wells, business manager, and M.E. Harvey, Assistant Editor.

Carter Godwin Woodson, educator and historian, was considered the Father of Black History. He was born December 19, 1875, New Canton, Virginia. He was an African-American historian, author, and journalist who, in 1915, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926 he pioneered the concept of a "Negro History Week," which was later expanded into Black History Month. Woodson died at his home in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on April 3, 1950....
